Hippo-slug day

Don’t expect much of me today.

I feel as heavy as a hippo

Who ate too much river-bottom moss

Or whatever it is they eat.

I feel as slow as a slug

Looking across the garden—

I can’t even think of going over there.

Heavy hippos, slow slugs. But I think

I may be wrong. Think of this:

The hippo doesn’t think herself heavy

The slug will get where it’s going

Eventually, no matter what, no hurry.

There you go. I’ll be heavy, I’ll be slow,

Hippo-slug day, river-garden delight.
