Advice on Making Poetry

To make poetry you must

do a few important things.

First, you must sound important.

Say fliffy-flaffy things. Put words

order in unexpected, surprise!

And say more fliffy-flaffy things.

Perfuffle fliddly-dee, you see

What I did there? Fliffy-flaffy

AND in the wrong order!

It’s difficult, don’t try it alone.

You must find a professor

To tell you what to do.

You write something, he or she

Frowns and says that’s wrong,

Then you write some more,

Heppity-hoopity tiggalong,

Sun gold as bright as is,

Until she stops frowning, finally,

And say it’s still not write.

(See what I sneaked in there! Ha!)

But in the time-mean, behind

The professor’s back, try this:

Write whatever you want to write,

Watch that tickle in your belly,

Sigh, drink some tea,

Leave the professors be.
